In Australia (dont know if its different or the same in other countries), how do speed cameras work? do they measure the speed only once? is it accurate and what is the range or distance from the camera when you are measured?

The fixed speed cameras detect the speed of vehicles by using piezo electronic detectors embedded into the road surface. These piezo detectors deflect slightly when a vehicle is driven over the detectors, which then triggers an electronic device that accurately measures the speed of the vehicle. If the speed of the vehicle exceeds the legal limit then a digital picture is taken of the offending vehicle.
Fixed speed cameras can monitor one to four lanes in the same direction. This is achieved by a wide angle lens camera, which monitors all lanes, and a telephoto lens camera, targeting each traffic lane. Therefore it is clear which vehicle has been detected. Vehicles cannot avoid camera detection by straddling lanes.
The other type is a Point to Point camera setup.
Point-to-point speed cameras consist of two separate cameras located some distance apart.
The cameras can determine if a vehicle has traveled faster than the minimum legal travel time for a specific section of road by reading and matching vehicle number plates at each camera site.
Both are accurate an average of 25 to 50 feet from the camera placement
Hope this helped

Those speed camera work like red light cameras. The camera is set to snap a picture when your car hit the speed it is set for and they are accurate. But if a fast flying bird comes in the path of the camera sensors, it will snap a picture. The working range I believe is 50-100ft. Watch Mythsbusters on the Discovery channel. They did an episode on this.

it sends out radio or sonar like waves and measures the time it takes to return when it hits your car. Multiple waves in a millisecond and multiple measurements before it gives out a reading. It is accurate. I have checked them out. Right on the money. Distance pretty well from the moment you see it, it saw you and got a reading.
