Does anyone know anything about converting to LPG?

Hi,
I am looking to convert my 99 model Nissan Pathfinder to LPG.
What steps will i have to undergo and how long do you have to wait.
Also does anyone know anything about the grant.
Also how many kms on average can you get per tank.

First of all, you're going to have a big heavy tank to contend with. It's sure going to reduce trunk or cargo space. I might be wrong, but I bet you can't put it inside the cabin where passengers are, if the thing sprang a leak you could be asphyxiated. Your mileage will drop because there's fewer Btu's in LPG than gasoline. While improbable, the engine really needs to have a higher compression ratio to make best use of the LPG. You'll need a regulator and the best thing is one that lets you keep the carb and switch back and forth between fuels.



As far as fuel range, most propane tanks are filled to about 80%. The tall gas cylinders you see that are around 4 feet tall and 14 inches wide are 20 gallon and hold 16 gallons of LPG. I'd expect a fuel mileage drop of probably around 20-25%.



I don't know what gasoline and LPG cost where you'e at, but by the time you figure the loss in gas mileage and the cost of conversion, it might be less expensive to forget the idea. In the US, the cost of propane (LPG) is around 60% of gasoline, give or take a bit.

lpg may be an alternative but you might consider alcohol as a better alternative. It's cleaner burning and is a renewable fuel source. Google Mike Brown one of the nations leading authorities on alcohol fuels.
