I'm writing a story. XD

Something vague is good, since I can always do further research on my own. I just don't know where to start Googling.

Also, "undercarriage" is the proper term, yes?

for a non-mechanic, something simple, like hanging up the exhaust. The exhaust usually hangs on rubber mounts to absorb vibration and kep the whole thing from breaking loose. But when the rubber dries out and gets brittle (or the exhaust 'jumps' out after hitting too many potholes!) then instead of being supported at the ends and the middle, it may be supported only at the ends, then it flexes too much and can break apart over time. Then you see someone's half of someone's exhause system (tailpipe, resonator, muffler)being left on the road as they drive along, and they are now making lots of noise.

PS, to fix it, you use a wire coat hanger, or duct tape! But they are not permenent fixes and you need to get the right rubber mounting, it is desigened specifically for the vibration points on your car, so it won't happen again, A rubber mounting is a few dollars, replacing the exhaust system can cost hundreds!

Oil pan seal, rear main seal, transmission. Undercarriage describes the underside of a car, but is not really a technical term, unless you are Daisy Duke.

Suspension is another, more specific, term you could use.

As for what one would lie under a car to fix, the list is long and ranges from simply changing the oil, up to removing the engine or transmission, as well as work on the suspension.

Good luck with your story.
