The best road trip is on US101 from south cal to north Wash. The drive is simple amazing. You drive along the coast pretty much the whole way.

For a road trip I would like to go to the Grand Canyon in the winter time because I can live without the heat in the summer.

My second choice would be Colorado.

My third choice would be British Columbia, Canada.

I guess I'll stop there. Thanks for asking.

My favorite road trip is one I take every year from Long Island, New York to the Outerbanks, North Carolina. For me, both the journey and the destination are both rewarding. For the journey I love going over the bridges into different states, especially over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, I like the farm stands and little antique stores on the side of the road, and an old drive-in theater we pass. Once we get there the sandy white beaches make the eleven hour ride all worth it!

My favorite road trip was to Mt. Whitney, the highest point in California and then to Death Valley, the lowest point in the U.S.A. We passed through the forest, saw some elephant seals at the beach, drove through the desert and even saw some snow, camping as we passed through. California is a beautiful place.

For me any road trip is good. It does not depends so much on the destination as much as the journey.

Key West Florida is awesome. Your still in the United States but you feel like your in a different world.

It's good trip to get there because you have to go through Miami and that's a great place to visit as well.

Baja California Sur. This is an excellent drive/camping trip. It would be important to do it soon though since the banks are buying up all the coast property and 10 or 15 years from now what is somewhat of a rugged trip will be nothing but high price resorts & cheap souvenier stands. Its still very beautiful at the moment though.

I love driving up the California Coast Highway in the Spring, from Malibu to Carmel. The journey and the destination are wonderful especially if you take your time.

In the summer, driving the mountain roads near Jamestown and Angles Camp is just beautiful. This area is West of Yosemite and doesn't have the crowds like Yosemite. You can pan for gold or just kick back and enjoy the sounds of the forest. The appeal is the destination, the mountains. The journey to the mountains can be full of traffic.

The mountains are their own appeal, of course, but each place you stay has its own beauty. If you don't want to rough it for the whole trip, spend a night or two in Dillon and Silverton. There is a little hotel there in Silverton that was a stage stop. I haven't stayed there in about ten years, but it was quaint and pleasant. That area has the scenery and diversions of Breckenridge and Aspen, but not the same snob factor, so I like Summit County better. I could spend an entire summer in Colorado and not spend two nights in the same place, and still have a wonderfult variety of places left to visit the NEXT year!Walking in it barefoot is truly a wonderful experience. It feels like no other sand I've ever walked on. Clearwater has a couple of really cool tourist destinations. There is a ride on a Pirate ship, a super fast ride on a huge speed boat, para-sailing along the beaches, or metal detecting on some of the cleanest beaches in the world. Every bit of the beach is designed with the beach using public in mind. There are plenty of places to eat and sleep along the entire beach, and further along the coast there are some small beaches that have very small crowds. This is a place where you can truly relax and forget about doing anything more physical than lying down on a chaise lounge while soaking up some rays. If you feel like using some muscles, then you can comb the beaches for some beautiful sea shells and sand dollars. I would recommend Clearwater Beach to anyone as a great destination.

The beach is right there as well but this summer I never made it to that beach, I just did the walk and sat on the rocks and built cairns and contemplated the vastness and unending power of the ocean. It blows my mind that those waves are moving in and out 24/7 and have done so for thousands and thousands of years, constantly -- no matter what else is going on.

The drive from Palm Springs, California to San Diego is fantastic and gorgeous -- if you take the back roads. I don't remember the specific route we took but it took longer than the direct way but it was SO worth it -- perhaps a 3 hour drive or something close to that. The mountain roads wind and curve and the vista is incredible.

I also love South Dakota. It's one of the first places I went to on an extended road trip and everyone told me it was going to be boring. WRONG! We spent the entire day driving east to west all the way through South Dakota and the endless fields of crops and hills and beautiful surprises were wonderful.

And when you get to Montana -- immediately when you cross the border from Wyoming into Montana, it is totally obvious why Montana is called big sky country. All of a sudden, the sky becomes big!! I love the fact that out west, the states have what seem like really natural borders. Each state has a different feel geologically and you can easily tell when you are somewhere else.

Find the Maroon Bells and the Sangre De Cristos. Finally, least three days and two nights at the Sand Dunes near Alamosa. (I like the cabins at the KOA near the park entrance, but you can camp inside the park itself.) I love putting that part of the trip last, and watching the sun rise and sun set over the dunes is among the most peaceful experiences I've ever had. I mean, an amazing trip I have done is from Houston, where I live, to Vancouver. It has the advantage of sending you through awesome territory so you have tons of fun places to stop and look at on the way, having numerous routes so on the way back you could find different things, and having a great end destination. Of course, this is a long trip. I would say road trip it to Colorado otherwise, which has a lot of the same advantages as driving to Vancouver, just much shorter a journey. For the last three and a half years I've been driving truck for a living so anywhere I suggest will certainly be doable by automobile. The one thing I've learned is that creation has many beautiful but varied faces. Here is a small list of some places I would reccomend:

1. Mt. Rushmore, maybe not to get away from it all, but the history and the scenery are fantastic. Hint--go for the 4th of July fireworks. You ain't seen fireworks till you see these.

2. Newfoundland, for the scenery and to get away from it all. Also, the journey is special. All the way up I95 and US1 to Calais, ME then travel across New Brunswick, CA and Nova Scotia, CA. In North Sydney, NS you will get on the huge commercial ferry for a 6 or more hour ferry ride to Newfoundland. If you go this time of year it will be 90+ miles and 6+ hours to Port au Basque. Summertime is when you can go out to St. Johns on the ferry. The trip across the island by automobile is 500+ miles but absolutely marvelous. Take your time as there are several small towns with name brand inns and a few places that are quaint but livable. Also, the peo[le are wonderful. I put a link below for the ferry.

3. If you like the coast but don't like the standard commercialism try Jekyll or St. Simons Islands in Georgia. Even around New Years the weather is passable and the people are great. And, as long as you are there, drive up to Savannah for fabulous history, not to mention food.

4. Now for the journey and destination, any where west of the Pecos is great for the scenery. And just pick a spot, almost any, if there are accomadations there will be scenery.

I hope that I have provided a few places that will add to the mix. I know of many more but I'll leave some for someone else.

A couple years ago I drove from L.A. up the gorgeous west coast to Vancouver and then east on Canadian Highway 1 - the most beautiful scenery I have ever encountered - I mean breathtaking. So if you head to Banff and then work your way down through Yellowstone, you should be in good shape for some awe. But if you don't want to head back into the states at that point and want to add some more major driving time through the beautiful Canadian wilderness, a guy in Calgary on that same trip recommended going north to the Yukon to see the northern lights (this was in summer). We didn't have the time for that unfortunately but thought it would be a fantastic trip in the future. I also love getting away from it all on a road trip and think the best thing is to just go - pick a road and a general direction - but not a destination per se - it's just that amazing feeling of being one person in a big beautiful world with all options open. That can be a little wild and not everyone's cup of tea but in any case, there's nothing like a great road trip!

Also, I have looked into the Anchorage to Denali train in Alaska - and then the safari from Denali to Barrow. Not exactly a road trip but looks like an amazing adventure!

Of all of the places I've been, I would pick Clearwater, Florida as the best driving destination. Having been to beaches on both coasts as well as the Gulf and all of the Great Lakes, I have never seen a beach with such beautiful sand. The sand on Clearwater Beach is white and very fine grain. From Sydney to Cairns (North Queensland)

It's a trip i've been dying to do. You drive up through brisbane, gold coast, Noosa, it's all along the east coast of Australia so the beaches are absolutely amazing.

And the destination is just as good as the journey for this one. When you go to Cairns you can g through the daintree and the great barrier reef! Which is the most amazing thing ever. Just be respectful because tourism can harm these places.

I think for a road trip it's not about the journey or the destination, it's about the people you go with. But i think if you had good people the destination and the journey would be just as good as each other for this one.

The BEST Road Trip destination is to be able to enjoy the COMPANY of your FAMILY members that you are closest too .. and that is FOR CERTAIN.

Many times over the past few decades (and due to our Military Service Careers) .. my siblings/I were separated by thousands of miles (and sometimes continents too) each and every time -- getting together was not a possibility -- and the only way that we had to stay in touch was an occasional phone call or a letter every so often.

Things have changed .. we have all gotten older -- and as we retire (I am the Eldest -- therefore already retired and retired first) -- I DO now have the ability (that I did NOT have as a Long Term Single Parent who was the ONLY responsible Parent too) ... to ENJOY Taking trips every year (once a year) to visit my siblings and the very FEW Remaining living relatives in our family.

The appeal is great -- these are the only PEOPLE who actually (and genuinely) CARE about me .. are willing to BE there for me (but can't -- we are just too far apart) ... and we know that we can rely on the family bond for sure.

So for me .. to go on these visits is EVERYTHING .. and I take my time to drive each way. I stop at sites that I want and record the trip via my SLR Cameras and jottings .. my memories (sadly -- there may not be a next generation to enjoy these observations or even care).

There are a couple of really good choices.

The desert Southwestern US: The 4 corners states alone have so many national parks - Bryce canyon, Canyonlands Nat'l park, White Sands, N.M, Carlsbad Caverns, Carlsbad N.M.(amazing!), The Petrified Forest, The Painted Desert, Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, CO - very cool, Colorado Springs is a jump off point for so much - Pike's Peak, Garden of the Gods, Estes Park (near Denver), and of course - the Grand Canyon (a can't miss - either rim). Stretch it out to Las Vegas. For a trip like this, yes there's definitely an appeal to the journey. Pack a huge cooler with picnic supplies and eat at rest stops and enjoy the view.

Another cool trip can be the deep south. The old plantation homes, The Smokey Mountains, Nashville & Memphis TN, New Orleans, Florida.

Either one of these trips is so educational as to our country's history too.

There are so many great places. I love to drive and see the country and do it a lot but would love to do it a lot more. This summer I went to The Marginal Way three times -- had never been there before. It's on the coast of Maine in Ogunquit. It is absolutely beautiful. It's a walking path of probably less than a mile, on a cliff right on the ocean. The ocean is beautiful and breathtaking and spectacular under just about any conditions. The rocks along the Maine coast are jagged and steep and varied.

Some wonderful places I've gone to that are great for a road trip are:

For a desert setting:

El Paso, Texas, and the New Mexico desert right beside it.

San Antonio, Texas

For a beach setting:

The Outer Banks, NC

Assateaque Island, MD

Key West, FL

I think the appeal is in the journey, it contains all the excitement for the destination!

OK, I've read plenty of thoughts, love most of them. So I'll share. In doing this more than once, I can now say I believe I have a fairly great clue how to make a truly memorial road trip.

We first started our road trips in 1997 due to getting to vacation without taking the honest time to schedule it or plan it. So we loaded up about a half a ton of junk (filled the entire Dodge Caravan from the Driver and passenger seats back with "just might need this...") and headed out.

We left Maryland, and headed to Pennsylvannia. A day stop with relatives. We tied the next day to it, stopping in Ohio with the other side of the family. So far, working well, we found an old friend's address in the address book, and made it over to Illinois. That day went well, but the next relatives were in Idaho. So we drove the Lewis and Clark Expedition route (as best possible). We stayed on the edge of Badlands, and did a Helo ride first thing in the morning. Wall Drug, probably a little too short of a stop in at Mount Rushmore, and Devil's tower by twilight.

The next day we made Yellowstone our goal. We luckily got to the park on the 3rd day the road had opened (in JUNE!) and stayed at Old Faithful Lodge.

Two days later we got off to the relatives in Idaho, and then swung south to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. A quick stop later at Four Corners, and a "burn" back to Maryland to get back to work. Wow! About 6000 miles and memories that still pull the heart strings.

What we discovered we have relived time and again, and the unplanned wonders we found made us bubble with excitement when we repeated this in 2000 (Route 66), 2003 (Oregon Trail), and in 2007 we looped Alaska and the Puget Sound area. Every trip was excellent, and a life long memory.

The travel is painful at times, but overall, the miles are memories that can never be forgotten, and the many wonders we experienced lift the trips to greatest times we've ever had.

By adding the historical trip along the way, and the friends and relatives for contacts, we roll a lot into a short time, but really have a great time doing it!

I mean breathtaking.

West is a fun drive that also provides a very fun and beautiful destination. The drive through northern MN to Thunder Bay is pretty neat too.

The journey has to be part of the appeal for a road trip. If not, you are much better of flying to the destination.

I would say Miami. It is 13 hours away from where i stay but i always enjoy the ride south because the scenery is the best to look at and the stops along the way (Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona, to name a few) are all desirable. The appeal is in both the journey and the destination. The destination is ideal, once there you will be able to unwind and forget about everything!!

Life is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the trip.

So it is with a road trip. A couple of years ago, my husband and I drove from San Diego to North Carolina, then diagonally across the country to Washington state, then back down to San Diego. It was fabulous!

My husband, who is 22 years my senior, was a POW of the Japanese as a teenager. He promised himself at that time that, if he survived, he would see this country for which he had sacrificed so much. Over the years, he was too busy raising a family and earning a living to ever keep that promise to himself. For his 80th birthday, I gave him this trip.

We had a blast! My husband, despite his age, is very young. He is often mistaken for being in his 50's. He still works 6 days a week at a heavy, physical job, and he plays racquetball twice a week. Thus this trip was not a strain on him. We laughed and sang and enjoyed the scenery immensely. I had seen it before, except for the Pacific Northwest, but he had not. He was like a little kid opening a present.

It is and will always remain the happiest memory of my life.

The perfect roadtrip, from southwest Michigan up to the Upper Peninsula this time of year. The trees have all turned, the leaves are falling and autumn is opening it's glorious colorfull arms to winter. The back roads are full of wildlife that you don't see with all of the leaves on.

Taking a few hours along the way each day, to explore the many sights, along with the state and national forests, it can be a beautiful 2 day trip up and longer to return. Find a cabin or B&B to stay in and the destination can match the journey.

For me, the best road trip destination is Boston, Massachusetts. It's a long drive away, but we can stop by and see the sights on our way there and have more fun in the actual city. The appeal is in both the journey and the destination; I love the journey since we can make many stops and have a great time there, and I love Boston itself!

Jim... are you a winter type of guy or a summer guy? If you are a winter person, and you just want some peace and quite, come to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. It's a very tiny town known for tourism. In the winter, it's off season and there's very little going on. However... there are some AMAZING cabins that are just incredible in this town. You can relax in a hot tub and watch the snow fall. The Crescent Hotel is a motel that's over 100 years old, and has been featured on Ghost Hunters. They have tours of the motel... or you can stay there if you're brave enough. :-) There is also a glass chapel that is gorgeous, caves, lakes, and so much more in this little town that doesn't even have a stoplight. If you want to step back in time... back to the 1800's... and enjoy a tranquil vacations in a fresh new cabin, go to Eureka Springs, Arkansas!

If you're more of a summer/beach kinda guy, my favorite home away from home is Ft. Walton Beach, FL. It's right on the emerald waters and white sand. Stay at the Radisson Beach Plaza Resort. It's a very nice motel! Ft. Walton Beach is just across the bridge from Destin, FL. I belive it is 7 or 8 miles total. They're basically one in the same. However, Destin is more of the "club/party" side and Ft. Walton is more of the "lay on the beach and enjoy the sun" side. If you go, be sure to eat at Fuddpuckers! It's great and a lot of fun, too!

I've done a TX/CA road trip twice in the past four years and probably one of the most exhilarating, truly American experiences is seeing the beauty of the American Southwest on the road.

It's a 24 hour trip cutting a swath through TX, NM, AZ and the "skinny middle" of CA; I used Route 66 during my 2004 trip and I-20/I-10 for 2008 - both were spectacular.

Both routes, a virtual straight shot through gorgeous deserts, mountains, small and not so small towns had me end up in California parking at the water's edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Find that filed under "mind-blowing"

I've always been a "its the journey, not the destination," kind of guy. With gas prices easing up and a hankering to do it for a third time, I'm sure I might end up heading West again. But if I find another suggestion on here to tempt me to head elsewhere, I might be open for a surprise.

P.S. Photos of my TX/CA road trip are on my blog at 360.yahoo.com/jejune98

First off Jim, Excellent question for all of us.

Second part first...The appeal should be IN the journey, rather than the destination, if a person is looking to get away for awhile.

Part of getting away from "it" all is getting away from the hustle and tempo of the regular schedule.

Much like the movie CARS and Radiator Springs...

Which brings me to my main point...

With the journey pulling rank on the destination, I would give you the Mother Road...Route 66. There are loads of cool things to be found along the way.

Most people can get on it (or what's left of it) with little or no trouble.

I have had the chance every once in awhile to be able to run some of it in a semi, and I absolutely cherish those chances and memories of my driving.

If a person is not able to run Route 66, then they should aim for Hwy 90 along the southern side, I grew up in rural southern Mississippi and I love Hwy 90, it is just a beautiful scene along the Gulf Coast.

As far as a destination goes, and without all the hour long waits for a 90 second ride, the Wisconsin Dells offer great opportunities for a family.

If you are traveling without children, I would suggest New Orleans during Mardi Gras-get a hotel in the French Quarter and after Fat Tuesday, go on a bus tour of the city. If that's too much for you, try California wine country, Las Vegas-you can see alot there without getting out of your car. Then there are tours of historic homes, though these are for children also, you get more enjoyment out of touring the homes without trying to keep up with the kids. You can also go to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, but if you go to Mackinack Island, you'll need to leave your car because there are no vehicles allowed on the island. What about Martha's Venyard? There's a great road trip. But the best road trip is just driving cross country and taking it from there.

The journey travels through Glasgow, then along the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond where we stop for an ice cream and photos before heading deep in the Highands. Some of the most beautiful scenery is at Glen Coe where you stop and take in the beauty of the mountains at the Pass at Glen Coe. No matter how many times we're here we take loads of photos. You can seriously never have too many there. The road is fun to drive too! It takes you into Ft. William and then to Loch Alsh where you stop for more photos at Eileen Donan Castle before crossing over the Skye Bridge and onto the most beautiful island in the world. The drive is fantastic but the destination is superb as well.

Well, may depend on where you live, and who is going with you. If you have kids that changes the "best" location.

Niagra Falls may be great, but not if you live in California. This would be too long of a trip from CA. .

So, your question has no exact answer, it is relative.

So, great choices are Disney World, Niagra Falls, other places in Florida like the Keys or St. Augustine. Really great to drive in Florida because it has very attractive landscape with palm trees, etc, as well as great highways. There is also NASA, especially if the Shuttle is going to be launched.

How about San Francisco or Las Vegas/Grand Canyon combination?

How about Denver, Colorado with the mountains nearby?

By state, I would pick Florida first, then Colorado, California maybe, but gas is very expensive there. New England is a good choice because you can visit so many historical places like Boston, D.C., etc, in a relatively small area. I live in Texas, but driving here can be boring with all the Prairie land, East Texas can be interesting with the forest. But overall I would not pick Texas.

I would love to drive out west to Colorado, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. I am from Maine and have never seen the large mountains or the desert, so I think that seeing those natural wonders of the world would be fantastic. I think that both the journey and the destination are factors in making for a fantastic trip, just to see the change in landscapes and experience some of what America has to offer.

My favorite road trip is the drive between Ayr on the SW coast of Scotland to the Isle of Skye which in the Western Isles of Scotland. For me the appeal is the journey. I have always loved road trips and there are so many possibilities and destinations. I enjoyed the Route 66 road trip and the Grand Canyon is a beautiful sight to behold. The Black Hills of South Dakota over to Grand Teton and Yellowstone is also a favorite of mine.

If you are traveling with children, I would say something historic like Colonial Williamsburg, maybe a civil war tour of the battle fields or the and homes, perhaps a tour of Salem Mass, maybe even try Texas and the Alamo. If you would like something more of the great out-doors, how about the Grand Canyon, or the Red Wood or Sequoia National Forest? There is more to the tours than just trees! There are animals in the natural habitat and whales just off the coast that travel from Alaska to Baja.

If you are traveling without children, I would suggest New Orleans during Mardi Gras-get a hotel in the French Quarter and after Fat Tuesday, go on a bus tour of the city. miss - either rim).

The best place for me to drive and get a way from it all is really not that far from where I live.

I can drive aprox. 8 miles and be in a place where I can breath, relax, and not be disturbed by people, usually.

It is a natural lake bed with willow trees and hawks and Eagles that fly close by.

Or, I can drive about 1 hour away and be in a place that is awesome. Cedar trees and no bldgs. or people or pavement.

Just dirt roads, mountains, and wild animals like the Coyote or rabbit and the wild Mustang that roam free.

Lots of natural rocks formations which is great considering I am a rock hound.

It is in the journey to my destination that relax and calms my nerves.

The best road trip is going to wyoming and seeing the teton national park and then swing by Yellowstone national park. They are 30 miles apart and have the most beautiful scenery in the world. Lewis and Clark found Yellowstone and nobody believed them when they came back. Why look at a big ditch called the grand canyon, why waste time looking at a statue of the four presidents in MT. Rushmore. Go to one of a kind trip and see two for one. Do some hiking and fishing, swiming and see all the grear gysers and mud pots and the yellowstone falls and lake, take a raft trip down the snake river ETC.!!

Me and my father used to go on a yearly 2-3 month "journey." I think the outdoors makes any trip very enjoyable whether you're there or not. I've been to wonderful places. I recommend the Grand Canyon (in the cooler months), Yellowstone National Park (ANYTIME!), or if you're not from my home state of Florida then get your behind over to the beach before time runs out an it's too cold even here for swimming! They're all gorgeous places and I can't wait till I can see them all again someday.

My husband builds custom motorcycles and every year in the Fall we take a trip to Brown County, In Indiana, just south of Bloomington Indiana, its the only time I ride on a bike with him, it is so so beautiful there in the Fall, the scenery is breath taking and the ride on the bike is great....we stay in a cabin there for a day and hike and then come home. So I would say that the trips appeal is the journey and the destination.....and who I am sharing it with, we have done this for the past 15 years

Wow, I love this question... I think the funnest place I've ever road tripped to was Memphis, TN. I've made the trip several times and part of it is the journey -- only 8 hours away from here in Kansas City, MO -- but the destination is incredible.

If you've never been there I highly recommend it.

Another amazing place to visit is to continue from Memphis down to Jackson, Mississippi -- while Memphis is the destination, Jackson is the journey. I've never seen anything more beautiful in my life.

For a destination, Glacier National Park in Montana is a must see. For the journey, get on the Blue Ridge Parkway (runs between Virginia and North Carolina) and make as many stops as you have time for. This highway was built for road trips, so travelers could enjoy the spectacular scenery.

My all-time favorite road trip was driving around Scotland for 3 weeks - from Glasgow down through the Borders, up to Edinburgh and St. Andrews, through the Highlands, the islands of Skye and Mull, on to Argyll, and back to Glasgow. Great trip.

For an armchair roadtrip, watch Long Way Round or Long Way Down, motorcycle trips with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman.

I think the best part of a trip is in the planning of it. It is always fun to think about all the great places you could go. Getting there is great too. If you have a really long trip then you can plan some side trips to really make the most of it. I don't know where you are starting from but be sure to take your GPS with you.

I would go online and look over some maps, look up some information about the cities that interest you. Then you can plot out fun things to do when you get there. It is such a hassle to try to plan it out after you arrive because it takes up all your time.

First you might decide what you like to do. Do you like to hike, swim, ski, shop, nightlife, all of them? Figure it out and go from there. Good luck and travel safely.

Honestly I believe that there are tons of places you can road trip to (save maybe Hawaii) that would be enormously worthwhile. There are tons of destinations that each have their own appeal; Napa Valley, Bodega Bay, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Niagra Falls, Santa Cruz, Mt Rainier, Vancouver, Montreal, Boston, even Saratoga Springs they all have their own appeals and things to do. I think the key to getting away would be simply going somewhere unfamiliar, if you're in a big city, then maybe a more isolated place like Napa, Bodega, or somewhere in nature could really help you to relax. For myself, it's not really quite so important where I go to getaway, but who I'm going with that makes the trip that much more memorable. If I had to pick somewhere, I'd pick... at the moment maybe Saratoga Springs, NY. It's got that small town quaintness feel that enables you to just relax. Haven't been for a while, but I liked it when I was there.

My all-time favorite road trip has been driving from California to Michigan but taking detours to experience all the wonderful National and State Parks along the way. You see the people and cultures change as the topography changes and it's all an experience to be had.

The journey is by far the most wonderful part of any road trip experience! I will never forget the narrow mountain roads of Yellowstone park or the cloud shadows on the plains in North Dakota.

Mammoth Lakes, California or Lake Tahoe

Stay at a cabin

The appeal is the journey and the destination. When I was a kid, we drove cross country and it was a great experience to see so many different places. The destination is great too because they definitely are places to "get away from it all" while experiencing nature and the outdoors.

Las Vegas strip is a 4 mile stretch which has huge hotels that are the replica in both exterior and interiors of famous destinations. To mention as few, Paris Paris - Replica of Eiffel tower, Venetian - The Italian city of Venice, Excalibur - medieval castles and architecture, Mirage - Egypt Pyramid, New York New York - Statue of Liberty and downtown New York.

Some may ask, is Las Vegas not a family destination? The answer is thankfully, yes it is a family destination!. You can still enjoy Las Vegas, even if you have kid(s) - there are so many casinos like circus circus, stratosphere and others which have full fledged rides like corkscrew rides inside the casinos! Mandalay bay hotel & casino in the strip, has artificial beach, golf course, shark reef aquarium. Likewise, every hotel has a few thrill rides or some attractions housed in them. Big shot thriller at Stratosphere, shoots passengers straight up until they are 1,081 feet above the Strip is one of the best that you cannot experience anywhere else in US.

Vegas is also famous for spectacular shows. The famous free shows are dancing fountain show at Bellagio which takes place in front of the Bellagio Casino/Hotel on the strip, every fifteen minutes, volcano eruption at mirage, Fremont street experience show, Treasure island battleship show. This will take place in front of the hotel where public can just stand and watch. These shows repeat every 15 - 30 mins. Apart from these shows there are several other shows such as cirque de soleil, which is a hi-tech spectacle, where you need prior reservations. Though they are a bit expensive, it is worth watching.

Make sure you see the spectacular night view of the Las Vegas city from the stratosphere tower point and Eiffel tower of Paris Paris.

In the evening you can just walk around the strip. Walking on a colorful street surrounded by awesome buildings, people partying with full enthusiasm is really a wonderful experience. During the day you can spend time in the casinos. You can also take a trip to the Hoover dam. The largest dam in America. It is just 1 hour drive from the strip. You can also plan a picnic to Lake Mead which has beautiful scenic views. If you have planned a long vacation, you can also club seeing Grand Canyon. It is one of the seven wonders. It is 4 hrs drives from Vegas.

When ever possible, plan your trip to Vegas, when it is not long weekend. In this way, you will get better deals in the hotels for stay. We went on road trip from San Jose, California to Las Vegas. Total distance is about 525 miles and is a 8 hrs journey!

Here are some tips for safe, hassle free road trip:

1. Plan your drive during the day light

Though, we may lose some vacation time in driving during the day, it is advisable because, it is risky to drive late night with sleep taking over, headlight glare, also you will get better road side assistance during the day time rather at night, incase of any breakdown.

2. Taking a Break

Take break for at least 10 mins in a rest area after 150 miles or so.

3. Adhere to perfect driving

As the drive is through hilly areas with lot of curves and narrow roads, make sure you follow all the driving instructions related to speed, signaling during lane change, etc so that you will not get into any accident.

4. Rent a car

If you own a used car, and your drive is more than 3 or 4 hrs, It is always better to rent a car and drive. In that case, you will get quick roadside assistance through the rental as their network will be faster to act to an emergency.

5. Phone Numbers

Have all the list of emergency numbers of your insurance, friends for immediate help, doctors

6. Gadgets

Make sure you take all your gadgets like Camera, iPod, GPS, Mobile along with their CHARGER.

7. Fueling

On this route, you have to pass through the Mojave Desert. So when you reach Bakersfield, make sure you fill up the car gas fully. Because there are no gas stations on this route and one or two will be there but they charge couple of dollars per gallon more. Also make sure you take enough water bottles when you travel this route.

One of the nicest and breathtaking road trips is to drive up the Pacific Coast Highay on the coast of California. The trip is wonderful between San Luis Obispo and Monterey. The views are incredible. As you drive along the road you look to the left and see the ocean as you've never seen it before. It actually looks purple sometimes. You can park the car and get out and video tape or take pictures. Plus, stopping in Monterey and San Fransisco would be added treats. I've never driven up the coast above San Fran, but I imagine that would be incredible too. Why not take it all the way and go into Oregon. That coast is supposed to be nice too.

To me, a road trip's appeal is in the journey as much as the destination. My favorite road trip is from IL (where I live) to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. It never fails to take my breath away. Seeing the varied landscapes across just a few states makes me appreciate how beautiful America really is, in all it's varied landscapes. And standing at the Lower Falls of Yellowstone is a spiritual experience for me. It brings me to tears at the beauty! I believe every American should see Yellowstone.

Banff and Jackson, Alberta Canada, some of the most spectacular scenery to be found in the Rocky Mountain chain. Not crowded. Peaceful, serene, majestic. Ahhhhh.....Calgon, take me away!

In this case, it would depend on where you started from, but some of the journey would be fantastic, other parts, bland. I take a variety of vacations, some are all about the journey, some are about the destination. The best have both.

My absolute favorite getaway from it all place would have to be Gatlinburg Tennessee, right in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. The appeal is both in the journey and the destination, You can rent a chalet in the Mountains for a reasonable price, the views are breathtaking, and you are def. away from everything. Yet all of the touristy thing are about a 20 min. drive down the mountain. You can see pics and get info at www.Gatlinburgtn.com check it out!

The drive from Sacramento California up to the Redwoods is gorgeous. I followed the coast, stopped frequently along the way to walk on the beach, have a meal, and check out little shops. Once you get to the Redwoods you can stay in a cabin, rent a tee pee or get pampered at a fancy resort - they have accommodations for all tastes and budgets. Hiking around the redwoods is amazing. The journey AND the destination are equally wonderful.

I would say Grant, Colorado has to be high on my list. If I recall correctly, there is only one road into it from either direction. I lived in Georgetown, CO and the Guanella Pass road leaves G'Town & ends up in Grant from that side. The trip is the appeal since there really is not much in Grant other than some good food. If you leave Grant going the other way you end up in Fairplay if I remember but the scenery is again beautiful and the fishing can be good also from either direction so take some gear.

seats back with "just might need this...") and headed out.

We luckily got to the park on the 3rd day the road had opened (in JUNE!) and stayed at Old Faithful Lodge.

d Silverton. There is a little hotel there in Silverton that was a stage stop. I haven't stayed there in about ten years, but it was quaint and pleasant. That area has the scenery and diversions of Breckenridge and Aspen, but not the same snob factor, so I like Summit County better. I could spend an entire summer in Colorado and not spend two nights in the same place, and still have a wonderfult variety of places left to visit the NEXT year!

It's the journey -- mentally and emotionally as well as physically.

My all time favorite road trip was from Kallispell, Montana, to Waterton Park in Alberta, Canada. The Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park is the most spectacularly beautiful place I've ever been. Then, resting in the tiny village of Waterton was like heaven.

I live in California, and I have road tripped to Alaska, Florida, Maine, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. The only state I have not been to is South Carolina (we are flying there for a day for Christmas and then up to New York just so we've done all 50). My favorite trips in order were Maine, Florida, South Dakota, Alaska, Wisconsin. We didn't actually spend that much time in Maine, but the trip was just wonderful. We were gone for 25 days and in that time I saw so much of America. The midwest really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, and I love the east coast. The weather was perfect, hardly any humidity. We also went to Niagara Falls, which was beautiful.

So, I have been on a lot of road trips in America, but I think it would be really fun to do one in Europe.

I took a road trip to Montana this summer by myself. I drove from southern California to Polson, Montana to visit a friend. We went throughout northern Montana and went to Glacier National Park, near the Canadian border. The drive was good through Utah getting there, it is mostly flat and you stay on the 15 freeway. Once you get beyond that it starts getting really beautiful through Idaho and Montana. I would have liked to drive more in that area. I came home through Yellowstone Park and Jackson Hole Wyoming. I would try anything in that general area. It is very green, mountainous and beautiful. I think the appeal is in both the journey and the destination.

I just took it in May! We live in Delaware and traveled approx. 3 1/2 hours by car to Stanley, Virginia near the Luray Caverns. Spent a glorious week in the mountains, peaceful and quiet and the people there were so friendly and no horns honking - very patient laid back drivers. The journey was nice but the destination was better

I drove from San Diago (Zoo) CA, on RT 1 all the way up the west coast to San Fransisco. After that we drove to the Big Basin with all the big trees are. We than drove to Yosemite , the best national park. There's The Hurst Castle, The Winchester Haunted House, The most Beautiful beaches in Malibu and on the Big Surf. and don't forget to drop by LA to see the Getty Art Museum. Very widely known for its appeal. Fly Home. I have taken many vacations but this one was incredible.

I live in Lisbon, Portugal, so the best road trip I know is a very short one. And it's the one you take from Lisbon to Sintra through Av. Marginal, Cascais and the N247 (google earth), passing Colares, Galamares, etc. I love it because it has a great landscape, good asphalt and lots of turns and that's great for a biker. And the destination is beautiful. I go there weekly or more. :)

Great question by the way. Very interesting to learn about the answers!

My husband and I go on road trips about every four months, and they are usually spontaneous, he comes home from work we toss stuff into the car and leave. Our favorite was driving the Iowa. Iowa is so beautiful. The cornfields just take you back to when a time life was more simple. We saw the bridges in Madison County in person and they are just gorgeous. One other time we got stuck in the panhandle of Oklahoma during one of the worst ice storms in the state's history. Not much out there, but be got to see some cool stuff like Black Mesa, and even went to Colorado and New Mexico--both were beautiful covered in snow (we had been to those places before, just not in the winter). A road trip is what you make of it. Make it fun and enjoy yourself. Oh, and we almost always camp that adds to the excitement. One time we camped at a Civil War battle field, very cool!

Would have to be Capri for me. This means Le Shuttle from London to Lille, then drive down to Marseille and along the coast roads to Nice, then the corniche round to Italy, and on right down to Naples and the Amalfi coast. I would actually need to backtrack a bit to go as far as Amalfi, then come back to Sorrento to get the ferry to Capri. And actually there's a 'no strange cars' rule on Capri as it's small, beautiful and congested, so I'd be leaving the car at Sorrento.

The appeal would be the second half of the journey, I love the Med, and the destination. Capri is idyllic.

It doesn't matter if you're on the interstates or off the beaten path in any of the states they run through, driving through the mountains (and hopefully stopping off to do a little camping to truly enjoy "nature's majesties" in full) is just best experience ever! There's always something new to see around every corner. They make the journey and the destination all equally worth it.

It all depends are where you live and what you enjoy doing. I find a drive around Lake Michigan enjoyable. You have the big cities of Milwaukee and Chicago, Door County, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Mackinac Island with its outstanding bridge, Grand Traverse Bay, and choices of the route back south. You can take side trips. For example, you can go to Grand Rapids to see the Gerald Ford Museum. You can visit the campuses of Michigan State University and/or Ann Arbor to see the U. of Mich. There are festivals everywhere from March through Oct. Great food and reasonably priced accommodations are available as well.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smokey Mountains of North Carolina is the most beautiful scenery in America in the middle of October. The appeal is the leasurely drive for Cherokee to the Virginia border.

The best roadtrip destination is NO DESTINATION!!!!!!!! Period

You might think I'm full of B.S. But I've proved it many times. try leaving your I'd and Credit cards at home and throwing the rest of your wallet out the window in some random place. Thats when it really gets fun. I lost my wallet in Oregon and had the best time of my life. I slept on the beach that the pirate ship floats out of in the movie goonies. I slept in a tattoo shop. I ended up staying several days in tis girls beach house even after getting money wired to me. You'll find that there is some really cool people out there you never would have met. Just Try it!!! Take ten bucks to eat with and give yourself at least two days before haveing somebody send you money.

I prefer the "journey to the center of the house" trip after a long day at work. The drive there isn't too bad and once I arrive at this grand subterranean destination I kick back, relax and get away from it ALL!

Mackinaw City and Mackinaw Island in Michigan. It's a long-time favorite of mine. Having lived in Michigan most of my life, we made annual pilgrimages to my grandparents' home in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. On the way, we would always stop at Sea Shell City (a very touristy, but really cool shop in Indian River), and once we reached Mackinaw City, and I saw that divided main street of town, lined with little gift shops, fudge shops (where you can watch fudge and other treats being made by hand daily), restaurants (pasties and whitefish!) and ending at the water's edge, where you can see the Mighty Mackinac Bridge....oh, heaven!

We always packed a picnic lunch and went to the local park, which is right on the water, with a view of the bridge, seagulls to feed, a sandy beach with quarter-operated binoculars to view the beautiful Mackinaw Island and bridge, and is home to the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse (which, sadly, is fenced off and charges admission to get in - used to be free). On the beach you can hunt for rocks with fossils in them - maybe you'll even find the state stone - a Petoskey Stone. Driftwood abounds - maybe it's a piece of a long-ago wrecked ship that has washed ashore?

Done all you can in the city? Hop on a ferry (there are several ferry lines in town) and journey across the water to Mackinaw Island. Bring your walking shoes and some cash - the island does not allow cars, and is a little on the pricey side. You can rent a bicycle, ride horseback, or ride in a horse & carriage around the island and learn of it's incredible history. There is a military fort on the island (and in the city on the mainland) to explore, with guided tours. During one of these tours when I was young, our family noticed a familiar surname on a headstone in the fort - after much research, it was discovered that we were related! Pretty cool! The island is home to the Grand Hotel, which at one time boasted the longest porch in the world. I'm sure another porch has been built that has surpassed it now, but none will surpass it for beauty! You used to be able to pay to walk on the porch, take pictures, etc. - but I think they've stopped that now. It's an incredible hotel, with extensive gardens. A movie has been filmed there and in other locations on the island - Somewhere in Time - starring the late Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. It was the only time in history that cars were allowed on the island.

All in all, a fantastic place to visit - come back year after year!

The appeal is in both the journey and the destination. We like to go to the mountains and go camping. One campground we enjoy is called The Dalles campground. It's not too far from where we live now; maybe half an hour.

It's beautiful with the tall trees and the river rushing by. We've stayed there several times over the years; one time we stayed there 5 days!

We love it and it's so close yet so far away! Lol.

The best road trip for me is and always will be the the 2 1/2 hour road trip from Lake City, Florida to Flagler Beach, Florida. There are several interesting things about the trip. First off, Hwy 100 is the only road that I am aware of in north central Florida that starts in a town 112 miles away and ends at the beach, literally. Other words, when you get to the end of Hwy 100, you have a choice to turn right or left onto A1A...or go straight and fall off into the ocean! What a beautiful view and with all the anticipation when one crosses over the inter coastal waterway bridge, then to see the roof tops of all the homes and the ocean on the way down the other side. At that point you know you are at the beach! It's totally a combination of appeal, excitement of the trip plus the final destination of where you are going.

National Park in Montana is a must see. For the journey, get on the Blue Ridge Parkway (runs between Virginia and North Carolina) and make as many stops as you have time for. This highway was built for road trips, so travelers could enjoy the spectacular scenery.

The Pacific Coast Hwy from California to Washington is pretty incredible. And not to mention the drive to Key West is a fun drive that also provides a very fun and beautiful destination. The drive through northern MN to Thunder Bay is pretty neat too.

KJOY had the right idea, although I personally enjoy driving up and down I-95 on trips between New York and Florida. In spite of the persistent construction(such as in Georgia) and random areas where you're required to slow down(Lumberton, and other cities in North Carolina), the scenery, sites, and vehicles along or near the east coast will never cease to amaze you. Unfortunately, many of the trucks along the coast no longer have as many colorful running lights as they used to, but they've still got other features to make them stand out.

And for me, the journey is equally as appealing as the journey, even with hardships and disappointments such as unfinished highways like the rerouting of I-95 along the DC Beltway and the Trenton Gap.

Appalachian Trail.....It is the most beautiful of country. The appeal is in the journey, but any town (filled with the most friendly of folk) could be named as a destination. Check out the New River on the way, it is the oldest river in America (second oldest in the world) and the only river that flows north, rent a canoe, you with think you are Hiawatha, gone back in time.

if u want to get away from it all than the best thing to do is pack everything u think u might need and pick a direction and drive. after driving a couple hours take a look at a map and see whats close to u and go from there. Than its a surprise and a great story. I did this one time and we had a blast, we were going through a stressful time so we just jumped in the car and drove, we went to a zoo, repelling and camping. It was great. My uncle did the same thing when he bought his new truck, asked his ids to go for a drive and when they woke up they were in new york, they said it was the best vacation.good luck and have fun.

Utah is by far the most beautiful place to go see the National Parks. Bryce Canyon is my personal favorite. Zion is a beautiful drive-thru. Little Wild Horse Canyon makes for a nice hike, and is approved for kids 5 on up. The Hoodoos are fun to climb all over in Goblin Valley. The appeal is mixed well in Utah. Even when you are "not there yet', the views are spectacular! Just make sure to have a professional digital camera and extra battery back-up and extra cards, because you will take lots of fabulous pictures! You will have to have a pic taken in the huge arch of Arches National Park. The views looking out over Canyonlands are spectacular! Bring the bug spray to Capitol Reef. The view is worth fighting off the bugs. The kids will enjoy Dinosaur National Monument, if they have any interest in finding dino bones. Utah is worth a yearly trip. There is more to see and enjoy, so check out the links below. Have fun!

I live in Houston, Texas and my favorite place to get away to is Austin, Texas. The summer is my favorite time to go. There is so much to do outdoors, from Barton Springs, Hamilton Pool, to seeing the bats under Congress bridge. And the best part hanging is out on Lake Austin and Lake Travis. We always try to stop by The Oasis to eat and see the sun set on Lake Travis Its just beautiful. And for breakfast I love Las Manitas, its a little hole in the wall on congress between 2nd & 3rd street downtown. Best breakfast tacos i've ever had!! So I would say the appeal is definitely in the destination. Its kind of a boring drive unless its in late march when you can see the bluebonnets.

Great question. My husband and I traveled from Maryland to Tennessee. We thouroughly enjoyed the scenery along the way and the shopping was great. I love to stop off and shop. And, there are so many things to do in Tennessee, and the food is great. For me, the appeal was in both, the journey and the destination. Problem with me is, I live out of a suitcase. And, I never want to go home. Yes, I'm a certified road runner.

My all-time favorite road trip was driving around Scotland for 3 weeks - from Glasgow down through the Borders, up to Edinburgh and St. Andrews, through the Highlands, the islands of Skye and Mull, on to Argyll, and back to Glasgow. Great trip.

I love Disneyland in Orlando.

Driving through the South is kind of adventurous.

Um, driving out to South Dakota and the Black Hills is cool.

Vermont is a pretty interesting state, along with California. They are both very different. California has a ton of sports cars, way more than I imagine any other state does. Vermont is deliberately very anti-commercial. Driving though there is unlike any other state, I wonder if a lot of Revolutionary War movies are filmed there.

There are so many of them in this country! Every city every state has something different! I make it a goal to visit at least one or two cities a year! The journey is always great especially if your with family or great friends! My favorites so far would have to las vegas, That is a city everyone must see even if you don't gamble! Another Great place to go is Niagara falls- Canadian side! It is Breathtaking! Of course going back home to columbus OH where I grew up and to see my family and friends deff love that one!!!

Hello. You don't say where you will begin your journey so I will assume you will be starting from somewhere in the U.S.. I agree with several of the other responses that Hwy.1 along the coast of California from Monterey all the way up to San Francisco and even beyond is breathtaking beyond words. Just make sure it won't be foggy or you won't see anything. My second choice would be to drive the East Coast from St. Augustine, FL (the oldest city in the US) to Charleston, SC. Be sure to explore the Spanish Fort in St. Augustine and also Fort Mantansa. As you make your way north, stop in St. Mary's and take the ferry to Cumberland Island, previously the homeplace of the tycoon, Thomas Carnegie. There are wild horses and loggerhead turtles come here to lay their eggs in early summer. You can also find fossilized sharks teeth along the shore. As you head of the coast, be sure to enjoy the many family owned seafood restaurants along the way. (One of my favorite is Barbara Jean's on St. Simon's Island.) Savannah is a must see, too before reaching Charleston. Much to see and do in a very relaxed and laid back atmosphere. Because of the heat in the summer I recommend going in May or late September if possible. Enjoy....

For me it's the live music in Austin, TX. Then I'll venture down to New Braunsfels and float down the Guadalupe with a group of friends, maybe get a camp site and chill. I also like Garner State Park and the Frio River. Really that's my driving destination from where I live, but anything in the nature.

I live in upper Wasington State, my family tries to make it to Ocean Shores, WA or Lincoln City, OR (Near Cannon beach, but Lincoln City is much better, right one the beach).

Lincoln City is the best place ever, it's quaint yet there are tons of nice people, and a outlet mall up the road, the appeal, It's so calming, laid back, there is no stresses about anything, even eating out isn't all that stressful.

We did a cross country drive and took our time! We sometimes took smaller roads and picked out fun places to see on the way! We chose baseball games and bridges to find!!! What fun we had!

We also had the best time meandering through New England into Canada and started across...and there's always the whole of California top to bottom! Short or long trip, it has such memories for us!

We even gave our son a cross country trip for his graduation gift with our van and his best friend! He says "road trip" everytime he gets in our car!

I would reccomend:

In North Sydney, NS you will get on the huge commercial ferry for a 6 or more hour ferry ride to Newfound

If you've got time on your hands and an adventurous streak (or some cash and time to kill) I'd strongly suggest following the route of Jack Kerouac in "On The Road".

You may not like his creed or ideas, but you have to admire his adventurism & freedom. Put it this way, even if you only make it into the next state and give up, you can always say you followed his footsteps (or tire tracks) - they'll instantly peg you as a intellectual who must have been there (the 60s) and have known him!t

My husband and I took my son (after living together 12 years got married in Las Vegas first) took the best road trip during last spring break (2007) to see a few of our country's National Parks. Left from Vegas and Red Rock Canyon and drove to Zion National Park, then to Bryce Canyon then North to Arches then all the way south to Arizona and Grand Canyon.

I have dubbed the Desert Pearl Inn close to Zion as my home away from home. The journey/adventure was as exciting as the destination/s. The economic or world crisis have not altered the visual beauty and amazement of these spectacular places. Yet.

I think the best road trip would be down the Blue Ridge Parkway. The appeal is in the journey and the destination, if you start at Skyline Drive in Virginia and make your way all the way down through North Carolina, Tennessee and into Georgia. The best time of year is the fall so you can see all of the beautiful Fall Foliage and experience the true meaning of beauty.

Definitely Colorado is the place to go. Get a cabin in the mountains and just relax. It is beautiful there! The Durango, Ouray, Colorado Springs areas are all nice places to visit. You can just sightsee or go to different places around the area. The cog railway up to Pikes Peak is interesting also. Have a great trip.

i think that you would love the Jersey Shore even more specific, Lavallette NJ. it has a beach a bay and lots of fun activities. next town over is seaside and in seaside there is amusement and water parks. There are lots of mini golf courses in the area. located in town there is a place called "the Music Man" it is a singing ice cream place where you enjoy eating ice cream while they sing and also may embarrasses you by making you sing or do something that is funny. If you've seen the movie "Back to the Jersey Shore" you kind of get the idea of the town! it is the best town and everyone is so nice i highly recommend Lavallette in the summer or whenever time it is warm.

Frederick Maryland!

This is a picturesque town is only about 45 minutes from DC and Baltimore (both of which you should try to see while on your way). Frederick is very into the Arts, it offers many museums and theaters in the Historic Downtown area. A very cool feature you will want to check out is the Community Bridge. It is covered in realistic murals and the paintings look 3D! { go tohttp://bridge.skyline.net/history/ to find out more } Also in Downtown you will find quaint shoppes and restaurants. Visit Pizza and Pretzel Creations to try a great variation of pizza (with pretzel dough--its DELICIOUS!).Then go to the Coffee Table and order a vanilla frescante. Try to visit on the First Saturday of each month, because all the stores do something special like hand out food/drinks. There are also activities for children too. This city is steeped in history too, Francis Scott Key (author of our national anthem) is buried here. There are so many historical sites I cant even begin to list. Or maybe you just want to have a picnic in the beautiful Baker Park under a willow tree. Please check this place out!!

highway 1 south, down the coast of Big Sur in California (between Monterey and Santa Barbara). it is a long and slow windy road, hugging the cliffs with views of the ocean the entire way and stops at many small B & Bs, camp grounds, national parks and beaches. the views are stunning, the beaches are private and the overnight stops are quaint and rustic.

if you are not up for an overnight along the way, you can make the drive from Carmel/Monterey California to Santa Barbara in about 6 hours...and stay at a 5 star resort at both ends of the drive.

I love a drive through the desert. I used to live in the Phoenix area and I'd drive from there to Las Vegas a couple times. It's a beautiful drive, through the desert, across the Hoover Dam....seeing the lights of Casino's suddenly appearing and lighting up the desrt sky. Then, of course Vegas itself is very unique, it's like visiting several countries and time periods at once! I think it's great to arrive at your destination and know you've made it, but getting there is half the fun!

I have really enjoyed cross country, i live on the east coast and once traveled the norhtern border to mt rushmore, then S to Estes national park in colorado. The site of the Rockies was breathtaking. heading into estes we passed "the overlook hotel". the site where the shining was filmed. I also really enjoy traveling to Gettysburg PA and walking the Tour road, you can drive through the 26 miles or, walk, horseback, or ride bike. Pickett's Charge is amazing!!! Though I haven't driven there (I used to fly private charters) I have met friends that have driven there and I have driven up and down 95 at some of the various stops that people can chose:

Key West

It's a wonderful little location even though it has become a little overly commercialized.

Another place I love, that is a nice road trip, is Oak Island, NC.

The gorgeous National Parks! Our favorite is a loop that includes (Utah) Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Arches; (Ariz.) Grand Canyon; and (Colorado) Mesa Verde. These can be done in a loop or may be taken a few in one trip and the balance in another. Don't forget to drive through Monument Valley and have a Navajo taco on the reservation.

Of these, my favorite is Bryce, my husband's is Zion and we both love Capitol Reef, Arches and Mesa Verde.

Our only mistake was seeing Grand Canyon after Zion and Bryce--it paled by comparison.

vacation does not end in car, or a road trip. to make the most successful trip, you will have to choose a very different variety of transportation. it can be best done by traveling in boats, which make sense that you are not experiencing the same environment as you always feel in the car. should be a very different from what we all do everyday in life, vacation also needs a far away place, which we had known but haven't being there.

The finger lakes! Its a quiet wonderful place to be. Enough people to make to friends and its not crowded. It really is relaxing and awesome. Visiting the shops where they show how to make wine surrounding the lakes is really cool and a new experience. You can even rent a boat with a little apartment inside and sleep over the lake. The destination is best part of the trip! If you haven't been their you should sometime.

Start in Salt Lake City, drive Highway 89 through such beauty as Logan Canyon, Bear Lake, and Star Valley Wyoming. The road then takes you to Jackson Hole, and through my favorite place in the world, Grand Teton National Park. The road cuts through the middle of the Park, so you see all of it. You then head through the 20 mile streach of road that lies between Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Then Yellowstone and all it's majesty. There are so many unique small towns and beautiful lodges the whole way up.

Mmmm! Wow ! So many places. Though Iam not familiar with the West. But Grand Canyon is nice …for what I hear. Toronto is nice. Northeast …Niagara Falls and N.Y. (Big Apple). Midwest ..is suppose Wisconsin Dells (though there is more to life than this place …is a tourist trap). Chicago for a day is much better. Though Porcupine Mtns ..in Upper Michigan is nice too. Southeast …spend some time with Mickey in Tampa. ATL is awesome or Savannah, GA (streets are more than 200 years old). Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk (coast) or Chimney Rock, Biltmore House all in N.C. Williamsburg, VA …see how they lived 300 years ago ..a living museum (literally). And my favorite …try seeing all the Smithsonian museums in D.C in one day (no one has).

Good luck.

Good question. Is it in the journey or destination? I would say its both. My friend and I took a road trip from Philadelphia, PA to Maine. The trip was a trip of visual and audio delight. The cities, the small towns, the people, the architecture the coast, the sampling of different flavors and sounds was an expierience I will never forget.

Everyone else seems to be going somewhere relaxing, somewhere beautiful, somewhere that has something beautiful to look at. But whenever I want to "get away from everything", the best thing that I can do is not sit around and "relax", I like to get out and have fun!

The best place that I have been to for a vacation is Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The spot has a lot of attractions to entertain myself and kids. There's always something to do; no time to sit around and waste a week by "relaxing". And probably the best part of Tennessee is the people. Most of them are some of the nicest people that you will ever meet.

Highway 101, the northern trip clear into Washington State and British Columbia is breathtaking! The entire journey is one of beauty and many sites in between.

The beautiful California coast, Big Sur, the giant redwoods, and more, more, more!

Then 400 miles of the spectacular Oregon coastline, breathtaking!

The Washington State coast is amazing as well, take a side trip on Highway 11 and visit Puget Sound, beautiful!

Then it's north to British Columbia, by then your so taken by the scenic sites of our beautiful country, you'll want to continue on to the ultimate destination...Alaska, still the last frontier and home of magnificent wildlife!

See you on the road Jim!

The appeal is always both the journey and the destination. If we don't enjoy the journey we miss a great part of life - the simple pleasure of living. All we ever really have is the here and now, so it is important to enjoy the journey. The journey is the present, and that is all we ever really have.

One of my most recent "big" road trips was to Carlsbad Caverns. They should be one of the wonders of the world. They are amazing to see, and actually quite humbling. Nature can create much more fantastic sights than anything manmade.

But that's not where I go to get away from it all because it is too far away. To get away from it all I drive to the ocean. Watching the power of the sea makes one realize how insignificant we really are in the overall scheme of things.

I can't limit my answer to just one destination.

My ideal short road trip is to Chincoteague, VA. It's about 3 1/2 hours from home, and it's a great place to get away from it all.

My ideal one-week vacation road trip is Tampa, Fl. It's about a 19 hour drive, but I get to see my sister and we're not too far away from the attractions in Orlando.

However, if I had all the time in the world, my ideal road trip would be a coast-to-coast drive, stopping along the way wherever I see something of interest. For me, it's more about the journey than the destination. Our country is beautiful, and I'd love to be able to take the time to see everything along the way.

We live on the Northern California Coast...we love to drive up it & stop by all the campgrounds. There are many beautiful areas that put you both right by the ocean or beautful mountains right behind. One area is called Fern Cayon in Orick California where you can hike from the campground over the hill to the ocean. Also Elk run free around there...it is truly spectacular!

Hey Jim,

We are from MS and when we want to get away for a week(usually in the fall) we go to the Great Smokey Mountains In TN. We usually rent a chalet way up in the mountains. The scenery is fabulous and breath taking. Then we go to Gatlinburg and shop, eat and take in the sites. We love to go to OberGatlinbrug and ski or ice skate. Of course we go to Dolly wood and to the Dixie Stampede. We usually pull our Harley behind us and take it out for a spin before we leave. Just an awesome vacation for two old folks who enjoy the out doors and the clean mountain air.

The Hocking Hills in Ohio. It is just over 2 hours from our house. They have great hiking down there with Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave and other attractions for nature lovers. There are numerous secluded cabins to rent and nothing but peace and tranquility all around. Almost all cabins have hot tubs and it is just so relaxing any time of year. Fall is the best! It is my "happy place"!

the best drive is from austin texas to tucson arizona, the drive is straight and great. Lots of little towns and some bigger ones, in Texas you can start in the great city of Austin then to Crockett, Iran Ft Stockton, and of course you can't pass the McDonald's Observatory and Bend National Park. Then on to El Paso and the surrounding areas. Then on to New Mexico Deming, Las Cruces and on to Tucson, but don't forget to stop at the smaller towns on I-10 Benson, Bissbee Wilcox and the fantastic Tombstone and then Tucson, hope this helps

Since I am in Texas and it takes soooooo long to get out of Texas I would say the appeal would be in the destination not in the journey. I love to go to the coast...driving to Luisianna...driving at the Florida coast is awesome as well.

Huntsville, Ontario, Canada

It's beautiful. Huntsville, Ontario, Canada

It's where my cottage is, I get there by car with my family, it takes about 2 hours from where we live, however it's worth it all. As soon as school finishes i go there, i enjoy life their, the nature scenes are breathtaking, the lake where we Seadoo/boat/swim/canoe is like ink, its so calm in the summer and in the winter we skidoo and snow shoe. There's so much to do with every single season, the leaves in the spring start budding and the leaves in fall are tainted with reds, yellows and orange. The appeal would definitely be the destination, as beautiful as it is to pass those cities before we hit Muskoka. My parents go there especially to get away from the city, to avoid stress, and they actually feel better when they go there.

The Black Hills of South Dakota are beautiful! You can go all the way from Crazy Horse Monument, past Mount Rushmore where the mama and baby mountain goats like to hang out right by the road, and drive up Hwy 385, bypassing Rapid City. You'll also pass by beautiful Lake Pactola until you get to Deadwood! Deadwood is a blast. It looks like a movie-prop town of the wild west. You can gamble, stay in historic hotels, or keep on going up to Devil's Tower--a "wicked" land monument that looks otherworldly.

Cape Cod. It's about 4 hours from Vermont. I love the ocean and being on the national seashore. If you go off season you can find beaches where you can be alone even for a little bit. The ocean reminds me that life will go on and how small we really are. If I need a quick get away I go to Stowe, which is only about 45 minuets away. The sound of the stream by the bike path or looking at the mountain is very relaxing.

I live in the midwest, so any where the's a Great Lake, specifically Chicago, Door County (WI) or the North Shore of Minnesota (Lake Superior). Chicago offers so much to do and see, plus the bonus of the lake right there. If your looking for peace and quiet, head north to Minnesota. It's the closest I've ever been to heaven! Door County is somewhere in between...not as urban as Chicago, but not at remote as the North Shore.

Assateague Island, VA. It's a long road trip for us, since we live in Vermont, but it s a beautiful place. We went there a few years back with our two kids and went to the beach every day, hiked along the nature trail, saw bald eagles, dolphins, and wild ponies. The locals in Chincoteague were kind and generous despite being over run with tourists most of the year. All in all, one of the best vacations EVER!

Charleston, SC - definitely worth the drive. Been there 10 times or so, and still find sooooo much to do and see. Caveat - stay away in July/August, unless you really like heat and humidity.

This is definitely the appeal of the destination. Drive we take is mostly interstate, but there are some definite scenic spots along the drive.

I have had the luxury of being able to fly and drive and go by bus and train all over N America. To this day my two favorites, for beauty and ease, are Calif to Utah and vice versa, Utah is full of natural wonders from a salt flat desert to alpine forest with snow on the mts in July. Utah to Yellowstone, the Sierras to Utah and Grand Canyon to Utah. Utah is home to some of the most protected lands and most national parks. Food and gas are always reasonable, with rooms and camping spaces good. Safe and clean. The ultimate road trips imo.

I do it every year. Oh the pacifc coast highway from LA to Santa Cruz.
2008-11-04 09:04:12 UTC
For me, the ideal vacation destination is a foreign place (by "foreign" I mean a place that I have never been to, not necessarily out of the country) that is captivating, and also one that will provide lasting memories. Sure, Washington D.C. is wonderful the first few times, but after a few hundred trips, it becomes "old hat". This applies to the journey as well as the destination, because traveling down the same 'ol roads loses its appeal after 'x' amount of times.
2014-10-24 02:48:46 UTC
Also, I plan to part company with the boys -- Mickey D, Popeye, Papa John, and yes even the Burger King. I know how to eat right, and this year, I am really going to make better food choices including less sugar and more Splenda containing products. In the past, I have found that planning ahead for my meals and especially not bringing the snacks home at all help me to help me.

Manchester, TN to go to Bonnaroo in June :)

The appeal is both the journey and the destination. The 10 - 12 hour road trip is bearable because of the anticipation of going to Bonnaroo and experiencing the festival.

And the destination is just unbelievable. In June, during Bonnaroo, Manchester becomes Tennessee's third largest city.

I love driving from near Canada to Mexico. I don't like tons of tourist attractions because 90% of them are very boring and usually overpriced.

I like to stop in Las Vegas and head to Cabo San Lucas. It's a grueling drive but when you get there, it's all worth it. The drive back is bad because the closer you get, the more sad you become. Vacation is over.

I would take a trip to West Virginia. Since I live there, it's got a beautiful view of the mountains and it's a great winter getaway for snowboarders. Grand Haven or Ludington, Michigan. They're the most beautiful, clean, quiet little towns. I've always wanted to move there. You can see Lake Michigan. Stay at Nader's Motel. It's cute and about 3 min walking distance to the beach. It's amazing.

Hands down the best place to visit is New York City. The first thing you do when you arrive is ditch the car and regain your freedom. If you really want to save money. Park the car in Jersey and take the rail into Manhattan. For the first time in your life you might experience the priceless beauty of freedom.

My favorite is to take my son (5) on a ride to a park or playground which we haven't explored yet. It gives me some special time with my son, we can unwind from the week and then create a special memory. Sometimes we go back to the same park if it was especially good, but usually we are content to just discover.

My favorite get-a -way is the drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Once in San Francisco a drive in the city for beautiful views of the ocean and other picturesque views. For another trip, I especially love the Phoenix/Scottsdale area and the drive through Sedona. Sedona is SO beautiful. Also, the drive from St. Louis, Missouri to Atlanta, Georgia for beautiful scenery.

I have been on many Americana road trips and depending on the location, many influences can be seen such as, French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, etc. It is a learning and cultural experience right here in the good old USA.

The journey is AS important as the destination - and in some cases more fun - but for me, a road trip up the coast of California to Big Sur or Mendocino is amazing. My favorite road trip memory was driving from Oklahoma to Washington D.C. - We hit all the major attractions along the way. Graceland was really cool and so was the Grand Ole Opry. I saw a program on tv last night about Route

thirty in Pennsylvania that looked really inter-

esting. A small, well kept road, sorta like the

old Route 66. It has little small cafes and shops

all along the way, real old unusual bridges and

waterfalls, old-time dollar stores and beautiful

scenery. That looked like a great vacation road

okay, going to have to say Vegas for me. My husband and I live in the San Fernando Valley in California. Whenever things get a little too much for us we pack a weekend bag and drive up to Vegas. The drive there gives us much needed alone time to talk and act goofy while singing along to the radio, and we like to stop at to eat along the way at someplace new or at Bun Boy! We either stay at stateline and enjoy our drinks and shrimp cocktail while just lounging in our room most the time, enjoying time away from "regular" life, or we'll stay at the strip and walk through the sparkly lights, holding each other and showering each other in PDA like we were before we got married 5 years ago. It's a great place to do as little, or as much as you want to. This year we've got a time share for Wyndham resorts in vegas. Gonna take the 3 year old with us this time and just relax by the pool and enjoy some much needed family time. Wyndham seems like the best place for me. Resort like atmosphere that's great for the family that's just a short walk to the strip for some more grown up fun. Win-Win.

I have two answers.

First, since it is close I would say the beach.

Second, because it is far I would say a place I'll just call "Thunderbird". It is sort of a desert/forest camping place and is hot in the summer but the river is ice cold. I also like it because nobody goes there.

Go to all three towns to see the colonial buildings and stuff then on the forth day go to bush gardens. Chincoteague Island in Virginia has a laid-back, old fashioned air without being expensive or overdeveloped. There seems to be plenty of competition among the motels and therefore you get lots for your money. There are lots of places that overlook peaceful inlets, and you see families kayaking or riding bikes together. Simple, non-chain, casual seafood restaurants, too. Lots of state and national park land.

Probably not a perfect place if you like nightclubs.

Great birding for birdwatchers, especially in spring and fall.

I would really love to go the grand canyon in a big rv with my 2 sisters, my sister's fiance, my parents and my beagle. I think the destination and the journey combine to form a memory you'll never forget, but nothing beats those "Are we there yet?" and "I gotta pee!" moments!

I would drive to orandlo flordia. I think that the appeal is in the jouney there. You could meet people from all walks of life and maybe eat all kinds of food and when you get there you could go to all the parks and enjoy the warm weather.

San Antonio. The city is beautiful and easy to get around. The riverwalk is so pleasant, as are the shops, the food, the music. You can take a gondola ride around the river...the historic sites, maybe even a game.

Alaska! The drive from Washington state through Canada along the Casiar highway is simply the most beautiful scenery on earth.

Be advised, not much in the way of modern conveniences, but the beauty of the drive makes up for that.

Go out West! South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana - Beautiful country! Wild horses, water falls cascading down the mountainside, open country! Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Old Faithful. Beautiful drive and quiet nights. A nice place to relax, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of our country.

For me, the best road trip would be to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I would start from the Phoenix/Scottsdale area and drive through Sedona to the Canyon. The change in scenery is breathtaking. This trip has appeal in both the journey and the destination.

I grew up doing the drive from So Cal to Louisiana. I always loved the drive and the progression from desert to tropical and back again. My family continued the tradition driving from Atlanta to Louisiana to So Cal, then later from VA to St. Louis to So Cal.

This summer my new husband and I drove from NorthWest OK to So Cal to Las Vegas to Cripple Creek to Dodge City to NW OK as our 30-year high school reunion/family reunion/honeymoon. Every day was a new adventure and so beautiful.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. Right on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I especially like the Big Meadow area. The park has camping or a lodge and cabins, has a nice restaurant at the lodge, a Tapp Room for night entertainment, Lots of trails to hike to beautiful waterfalls, cascading pools, and overlooks. If the weather is nice they have an outdoor amphitheater with Ranger shows a couple nights each week. There's a large meadow where deer roam nightly and you can take walks through, it's beautiful! There are Ranger lead hikes as well as hike your own trails and the rangers are great to get out maps and show you trails in the park that would suit your needs. They have a very nice welcome center with a nice short movie on the making of the park. Oh, and they take people to Camp Rapidan (Hoover's Presidential Camp) to tour, it's beautiful! No charge. One of the best kept secrets in the world!

http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm

Edit: they also have shows up at Skyland and very nice wine tastings at Skyland and at Big Meadows Lodges and you get to take home the glasses! (small fee for glasses, but not expensive). And for the ladies they also have a "tea with the first ladies" which is really neat!

Edit: People need to stop giving thumbs down for this question. It is one of personal opinion. All answers are good as long as they answer the question.

I've done many road-trips from the heart of Indiana where I live now, to the coast of Maine to see my family & "homeland". (And more than handful of trips to FL.) - All by various routes, detours, and inevitable wrong-turns that lead you to nowhere. lol...

I have to say, Maine truly is a place like no other I've ever been. - The rocky coast, picturesque scenery (everywhere), and generally, a different way of living up there...It will always be dear to me. :)

And several years back, I decided Pennsylvania is BY FAR the most enjoyable state to drive thru (even being the longest!). - The interstate is so smooth & flat, even though it's cut right thru the mountains; so you just coast at a comfortable speed and enjoy the views. - The rolling hills & vistas are spectacular! - Areas of Mennonite (& Amish) "country", with their farms & homesteads, are a sight to behold, as well...I never tired of it.

Mainly, our RTs are based on a destination; so THAT is the biggest appeal for us, when we begin plans for the ride there. ;)...But, on a long trip, we always try to find something interesting to visit along the way, to break up the day in the vehicle. - It's a good excuse to get out and stretch legs (& needed exercise for the kids!). :)

My best trips are cross country trips, east coast to west coast in Autumn. The long lonely roads of the midwest states always represented something to me. Once you get out there going forward or turning around and going back are equals. Everything slows down and the sunsets blend with the sunrises. The trips always make me think of the Jack Kerouac book On the Road when he mentions the big skies of that part of the world . I'm not sure the exact words he used. When you leave the Notheastern states in their autumn colors and head through the dying farmlands of the midwest you know that at the very end of your trip the world will come to life again on the west coast as the winters just aren't as cruel out there. So that's it, a long ride across America passing through fading nature to the west coast.

A couple years ago I drove from L.A. up the gorgeous west coast to Vancouver and then east on Canadian Highway 1 - the most beautiful scenery I have ever encountered - I mean breathtaking. So if you head to Banff and then work your way down through Yellowstone,

I makes the long trip completely worth it.

The islands are beautiful; beautiful beaches, forests, rocks, roads, animals, and the history and culture are wonderful. I can stay there for weeks, months and not get bored.

It would be important to do it soon though since the banks are buying up all the coast property and 10 or 15 years from now what is somewhat of a rugged trip will be nothing but high price resorts & cheap souvenier stands. Its still very beautiful at the moment though.

But the real fun of going on a road trip is to find the unexpected. Travel slowly on small roads, meet people, get lost, have breakdowns and learn from each experience. The West Coast of the U.S.

Driving from San Diego California to Vancouver B.C. along the coast is one of my favorite trips. There is so much variety anyone can find what there are looking for. My favorites include Monterey, San Francisco, The Wine Country, The Redwoods, Oregon Coast with all the lighthouses, Washington and Puget Sound and the world class city of Vancouver.

There's a big park on the Superior, WI side that is a peninsula jutting out into lake Superior. Split Rock Lighthouse is there too. I live in Freeland, MI so the best road trip I can think of is one to Los Angeles, CA. Of course there would be many stops along the way. You could bend and sway your path to see the log cabin Abraham Lincoln was born in. Or maybe the sod home Laura Ingalls was born in. The black hills, the badlands, devils tower, Mount Rushmore, Las Vegas, the grand canyon, the possibilities are almost endless. You could even pick up whats left of route 66 in Chicago and drive as much of it as you legally can all the way there. Ride it by motorcycle in the summer, it would definitely be a life changing experience. Take a camper if you prefer. Start in summer, take until winter to get there if you can. Stay till early spring and head back, whatever you want to do. The trip would almost certainly about the journey, through our country, through history, and through time.

I am making big plans to drive the AlCan Highway next summer (around Sept.) to Anchorage, Alaska.

I have been to Alaska several times and am planning to relocate there in a few years. This will be the longest road trip I have ever made alone (well, I'm taking my 2 dogs with me). Yes, you can get there by car, you just have to go through Canada to do it.

The appeal is in both, the journey and the destination. I have been to Anchorage several times, but have yet to go by car (or in my case, pickup truck). It's going to be the ultimate adventure!

As far as places I have already been... since I live in Texas, the best road trip destination is the one to Port Aransas. The appeal is definitely only in the destination.

I'm not really all about long car trips. I'm in Ohio, and to go to Florida from here, I'd MUCH rather fly. As far as road trips go, probably Brown County Indiana (southern part of the state) would be my fave. There's a little town over there called Nashville, and they have the Little Nashville Opry, where you can catch some great country music acts. Lots of shopping, plus there's a state park that is absolutely beautiful this time of year. Hilly, and the leaves are changing colors now.... mmmm... makes me want to hop in the car and call off work....lol.

My favorite destinations are Yosemite in California, The Olympic National Park in Washington, and The Grand Canyon to Tucson in Arizona. All these places have spectacular beauty and things which will interest everyone. You can find deserted places or enjoy the company of people (and the people who go to those places are generally very nice).

But the real fun of going on a road trip is to find the unexpected. Travel slowly on small roads, meet people, get lost, have breakdowns and learn from each experience. Some of my life-long friends are folks I met on various road trips. I am never lonely (even when traveling alone) and each day is a new adventure.

I am currently recovering from a serious accident but will hit the trail again in the near future. I plan to go by bicycle on my next trip and will cover many hundreds of miles. I can't wait to go!

If you love cool summer days, the Rockies are terrific. You can stay at off season prices in Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and a whole host of small mountain towns you've never heard of. You can find a cheap summer rental and spend three months in dry, cool summer weather.

i have 3 in one.. bryce, zion, and the grand canyon..

bryce is amazing to walk through.. not too grueling, but you still get a work out.. and the views are breath-taking.. just make sure you have plenty of battery power in your camera!

zion is cool too because you are already in the canyon when you park.. and then theres the river walk through the canyon..

i think grand canyon speaks for itself.. the sheer vastness is amazing to see!

i love the journey and the destination! driving to these places is just amazing.. especially when i live in florida! you dont usually see places like that!

There is no one best destination. If you like mountains, go to Colorado. If you like the beach, go to Florida or Texas or California. Other places might be just as appealing to some people; Hot Springs, Arkansas; Branson, Missouri; the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I suppose you would not want to go to New York or Washington, D. C. to "get away from it all."

I love going to Austin, Texas. I live near Dallas, Texas so it doesn't take too long to get there by car. I like going to Austin, because of the atmosphere. It's really fun there and there's always something to do. My fiance and I went to Austin together last 4th of July for a few days and it was so much fun. The reason why we went there is because we were going to see 311 in concert (at the Backyard). We ended up having a blast and didn't want to leave.

I also love Pensacola, Florida. My family lives there and we bring our jet skis for about 2 weeks and hang out every summer. It's a lot of fun and the scenery on the way there isn't too bad.

I also love going to Colorado.. I love snowboarding so Colorado is an awesome place to go during the winter. I also like going to California (San Bernardino) and snowboarding at Big Bear.

Probably would be good to list where you are from, but I agree with one of the respondents about the Outer Banks. I have done NJ to Outer Banks, NC numerous times and it is great. The journey is pretty straightforward until you get close, then it's wild and feels like the middle of nowhere. Destination goes without saying.

i recommend the Appalachian Mountains up in the New Hampshire area. its where I've lived my whole life and its great, its usually a very quite area especially when out in a wooded area, you can visit Mount Monadnock, its a nice hiking mountain and happens to be the second most climbed mountain in the world and has a spectacular view from the top. you used to be able to see a natural phenomenon known as the Old Man in the Mountain, it was a shape of an old mans face carved into a mountain side by natural forces (wind, rain, etc) and if you looked at the mountain from the right side you could see him, but he fell a few years back and is no longer there, but you can see where he once resided...

anyways here is a link you might want to check out for more info http://www.nhstateparks.org/

Depends upon where you are coming from.

I would vote on anything with a theme and unique. Try the Gilroy California Garlic Festival. Because it's always fun to tell your friends that you drove hundreds of miles just to celebrate your passion for garlic.

Drive the Alaska-Canada highway. I have done it 3 times and loved each trip. If you go get the "Milepost" book. It covers every mile of the highway and has a lot of interesting info. We drive a van and camped on each trip. You do get away from it all.

Well in US the best place around drive on the back roads of Vermont Main and New Hampshire they are beautiful small states and don't forget to visit Mystic Connecticut and the shore of new haven then put your car in the ferry and cross to long island New York .

Out the country I'll rather visit the desert in southern Morocco and drive along Ourzazzat area.

Definitely Vegas for a road trip. It is beautiful on the way there, driving through the deserts and mountains. Hotel stays are relatively cheap in Vegas and parking is free almost everywhere so that would be perfect as well. You should definitely consider it! Just make sure you have enough gas to get through the deserts where gas stations are sparse!

I live in the Chicago area and I love road trips. When I want to get away from it all, I throw everyone in the car, pack a lunch, grab some CD's and head up to South haven Michigan. It has something for everybody (Shops and Boutiques, the beach nearby, an awesome playground for the kids). Plus miles and miles of country road with plenty of roadside farmstands.

My family and I just recently took a Northern Illinois Mississppi River roadtrip. AWESOME!

take the pan-american highway down to panama or even further south, or up to alaska. or down from alaska, if you live there. also, i would say the appeal is in both the journey and the destination, but on road trips of this nature, the journey is usually a part of the destination, so its not really an either/or thing i don't think

"showoff" stole my thunder. Traveling from the southern-most tip of Highway 101 in southern California, travel the entire length of the state. Stretches of this road have been featured in many films and t.v. shows with the rocky cliffs on one side, the crystal blue Pacific on the other.

The journey itself is the appeal. My family traveled from Needles, CA (desert) through Sequoia National Forest, San Francisco, and traveled a long stretch of the highway at night - enjoyed the moon lit waters of the Pacific and the slow meandering mountainous drive.

Giant Sequoias. I think these trees are the coolest because they are so huge even though they come from a seed the size of a grain of wheat The parks lie in the southern Sierra Nevada, east of the San Joaquin Valley. Activities vary greatly by season and elevation - which ranges from 1300' to 14,494' (see Climate below).

A couple of years ago I drove from MI to Quebec City - along the way you can stop at Ottawa and Montreal - which I had been to on a previous trip. Then I drove through Maine to Bar Harbor, went down to Kennebunkport, through Salem and then into Boston. I spent a couple of days in Cambridge and toured the Harvard campus and museums. Drove home through Mass. and N.Y. Great Trip!

I agree with the 6th person who answered and said Thailand (But not Pattaya. Its very seedy. Not a place someone could take their family. All the stereotypes Americans have about Thailand are because of that one town in particular.). It really is paradise and the best place to take a vacation. I go every year and have been in all the major towns and cities but traveling from the south to the north is the best...best time of my life....but thats not a road trip for us in USA so I would have to say California. Just about every road trip movie is about people having an adventure trying to get to California. Im from Florida and moved to California and its definately the best out of all the states Ive lived in or driven through(Ive driven up to Maine from Florida many times and seen all those states and many of the states between Florida and Cali). The most scenic, fun with things to do, best places to eat with the most options and a little of everything (Mountains, Ocean, Snow, Sun, Rivers, Lakes, Valleys, Deserts, Cities, Farms etc.) I agree with all the people who said California coast, its definately the most beautiful out of any road trip.

Movies about Road Trips to California that I can think of off hand but I know theres much more than these:

The Sure Thing

Kalifornia

The Wizard

Dancer, Texas Pop. 81

from minn to south dakota to Mt. rushmore you have nothing to look at but open fields and blue sky's. and enough time to think about any thing and then you can stop in the bad lands and see old sea bottoms and fossils. well of course on the way you have to stop at wall drug they only have bill boards telling you to stop 200 miles away that is the best trip!!! the journey is good but to see the old pres and someones hard work and determination makes the destination to be the best. it makes you proud to live in the usa. vote today!!!!!!!

The route 1 up the California coast. The entire part is all about the beaches, but each "leg" is unique. The southern part is mostly city, but has a lot of nice areas (such as tide pools). The middle part is mostly hilly, a bit greener, and has some amazing rock beaches and a world-class aquarium (Monterey Bay). The northern stretch is VERY green, with redwood trees and lots of older (for California) buildings.

It is *all* about the journey--you see something interesting, you stop!

We've often just gotten in the car with no real destination just high hopes and beef jerky. Someone always has a map describing what's in either direction, and we vote on which direction to take when we come to highway intersections. I've always felt it was about finding new things, some little museum, old cemetery, or mom and pop fruit stand. To me it was always about the ride.

South Dakota: Mt. Rushmore area, Wall Drug (hit the breakfast buffet), the Badlands, and maybe slip over to Devil's Tower in Wyoming. It's not too crowded.

Another good area not far from there, at least in terms of road tripping, is to hit scenic highway 61 in the Duluth area of MN. There's a big park on the Superior, WI side that is a peninsula jutting out into lake Superior. Split Rock Lighthouse is there too. If you keep heading north on Hwy. 61 to Grand Portage, MN, you can catch a ferry in the non-winter seasons to Isle Royale which is actually part of Michigan. Very beautiful.

Maine.

I live in the Midwest, so traveling east or west are equally gratifying, but traveling to Maine is so enriching for what you get to see along the way. If your route is chosen properly you can detour to Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, and go to the Ben & Jerry's and Vermont Teddy Bear factories. Then Maine itself is rugged and beautiful, the pine trees and coastline with waves crashing in small inlets. I also love having pancakes with fresh syrup and stopping at mom and pop shops along the way.

I love driving the Natchez Trace. So many interesting stops, history and scenery all in one package.

It is like traveling back in time.

A road trip from any direction to Yellowstone would be the first choice - but especially if coming from the Northwest, through beautiful Washington, Idaho and Montana - exquisite views, wide open lands, trees and mountains as far as the eye can see, and then of course, Yellowstone.

Choice 2 is driving Highway 101 up from Southern California through Oregon and into Washington. Again for almost the same reasons but instead of wide open lands, you have the magnificent West Coastline views and beaches.

Follow the route of the St. Lawrence Seaway on the Canadian side.

So much variety in topography, all of the great cities, tiny/quaint villages, beautiful sunrises/sets, different languages, and you end up at the Atlantic.

A week well spent. Did it this summer. Whale watching was awesome. Surfed tidal bore on the Shubenacadie River.

Best vacation in a long time!

It's all about the journey! My fiance's family lives all over the country- we live in MA, his grandparents live in CA, his brother lives in WA, his old friends are all in OR, his sister is in CO, and his mother is in KY. The best road trip is driving across the country to our favorite destination, the west coast, but the most beautiful part is seeing all of our loved ones in one awesome month-long trip through mountains, plains, desert and along both coasts, all in his little Honda Civic! :)

Door County, WI for the beach & water fun

It really depends on a few factors, what do you want to do? What do you like to do? Is it a family outing? Is it for couples?

Myself personally, I love Myrtle Beach, SC. it's a good mixture of family environment if you have kids and plenty to do once you put the kids down and want some alone time together.

You wanna know a SUPER place to take a trip?

Walk straight into my backyard,

There, you'll find a mess of gorgeous squirrels a chewing and packin' thar lil' cheeks up w/goody hops-n-nutty nuts, and critter feed into thar expanded cheeks.

And added to my lil' country safari tis the most BEAUTIFUL alley cats, country scruffy felines frolicking amoungst my wild free style garden-n-dancing w/the dragon flies and catchin' butterflies all the live long day.

*Also thar's 50 pound Percy O'possum who wobbles around here at night for an extra treat for your adventure.

There's absolutely NO extra fees or fighting traffic, or having to get a crowbar to yer wallet to pay up to sky high airfare prices, or waiting in line in a restaurant.

It's easy, lovely and always a fun trip here. AHEEHEE!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my, you must check out Cannery Row over in Monterey Bay, CA. It was my favorite vacation as a little one, and I'm sure you'd feel the same! You can go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for a whole day, then head over to Bubba Gump's [coconut shrimp is a must!]. As I live in Vienna near one of the easy exit roads out of Vienna. I love driving South towards Semmering, as you come out of the city I like taking the road towards Baden which follows the old aqueduct built by the Romans, to supply water to Vienna which comes from Scheeburg nearly 80 Kilometers of wonderful engineering up and down a fantastic landscape, I even have a CD ROM which shows me how it was built. The drive to Semmering on the rout can pass many castles and through so many Natural parks and high mountains with breath taking views. which also show the way the Austrians use natural ways of making power wind water and sun. with such lovely villages, I never tire of the beautiful countryside. before I arrive in the mountains of Semmering I can stop in Maria Schutz for a fantastic view over one of the valleys and have a great coffee or a nice meal at Guesthouse Rumpler who have their own fish pond for real fresh fish in mountain water. or some times real Elk from Norway. great food at good prices then walk and see the famous church there and have one of the nicest Krapfen you can get in Austria in the cafe next to the Kloster. Drive on then summer or winter through the tunnels towards Mürzzuschlag coming off at Spital where the winter Olympics where held 2005. you can enjoy a day at the ski areas not even having to ski just going up on the lifts seeing the view any time of year and having a hot spiced wine in winter or a cold fruit juice or even a good beer in summer. I then can visit my friends who have a lovely house in the forest near-by and spend the night or weekend there.

We are so blessed to live where we do just a few minutes in any direction takes us to the most lovely places by any type of transport we are just back from a weekend tour just 40 kilometers away down the Danube by the Roman area of Canvntvm the famous village and fort built in A.D.6 till the 4th century all restored then finished off at The Imperial Festival Palace Hof which belonged to Prince Eugene and Empress Maria Theresa. Nearly every weekend we take a road trip we don't even have to go far and in 5 years we have not seen half of our local area, Vienna has just some of the best road, train, boat, trips one can make

My husband and I once drove the PCH (101) from San Diego to NW Washington, and then went over to Seattle to visit some friends there. Best road trip we've ever taken together. Of course, it probably helped that our children weren't with us, but I'd do it again tomorrow, with or without kids. Everyone in the US should drive this route once in their lifetime.

Living in the midwest, I had never driven to the southwestern part of the country. However, I had the opportunity to do so at the beginning of 2008.

The road trip consisted of leaving Indiana and heading to Tempe, Arizona... then heading up to Las Vegas... then over to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, and around Monument Valley... then up to the southwest corner of Colorado... up and over the Rockies to Denver... then back home.

It was amazing to see the geography of New Mexico and Arizona... to drive on the Las Vegas strip and see parts of the city that I had never visited... taking in the little stops leading to one of the most beautiful spots in our country - the Grand Canyon... and then driving through the Continental Divide, up over the Rockies... and then hanging out in Denver, one of the neatest towns I've ever been to.

It was ten days and 4,500+ miles, but totally worth it. A road trip is an absolute must in anyone's life.

Hogenakkal is unique as it is the only natural, traditional river spa in our land. It also offers a thrilling experience, and perhaps that is why the name means the smoke that thunders. And, as an added bonus, one can visit the giant terra-cotta village guardians, the Aiyanars, on the way to Hogenakkal.

i live in New Zealand, every year we go to a place called kaiaua camping grounds a 2 hour drive away from home, during the summer time, we set up our tents along with 20 other tents that go there every year, and every year 1 tent gets every one together and has a big new years party, the beach is a 1min walk away, theres a few bush walks, some of them has the beat views around, we always go eeling at night, we gather all the kids up and go for a bush walk at night, the kids love it, then theres a water hole a half hour drive from camp, we all load up our cars and spend the day at the water hole, we do a bit of diving its awesome as

I look forward to it every year, suns burning hot, kids are running around, every one is having a laugh, no reality just an awesome time for the family to catch up and have and awesome holiday

Go to South East Asia, Cambodia. Many people, when they hear the name Angkor in Cambodia in a conversation, they ask: "Angkor What?". Angkor Wat is one of the most beautiful and fascinating places on the planet. Made by the Khmer kings in a process that lasts almost 4 centuries, this magnificent area has been abandoned and hidden by the forest. Re-discovered by a french man about 150 years ago, Angkor Wat is ready to become one of the most visited archaeological and artistic wonders on the planet.

The Queen Charlotte Islands in BC, Canada. Part of the appeal is the journey, BC is a beautiful province (of course it's easy to be biased coming from there), with so many different ecosystems, it's impossible not to fall in love, but what I love most are the actual Islands. I makes the long trip completely worth it.

The islands are beautiful; beautiful beaches, forests, rocks, roads, animals, and the history and culture are wonderful. I can stay there for weeks, months and not get bored.

Nova Scotia Canada you can get there by car and take the princess of acadia ferry from Saint John New Brunswick to Digby Nova Scotia takes about 3 hours and saves about 500 miles driving. Nova Scotia has nice beaches, musems, coastline and forts with cannons. in Greenwood there is an aircraft museum which is world war two and other things from that era. It is before you would go on to the armed forces base. Halifax is a neat city to see and stay in. It has a lot of nice places to go and a lot of things to do .

Puerto Penasco, Mexico. My family has been vacationing there about once a year, sometimes more, for as long as I can remember. We always stay in a camp park right next to the beach. We can literally step out of our travel trailer, walk less than the length of a football field, and step onto the sand. It's fantastic.

I'd like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it's hard to understand why people don't stay home.

Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere - anywhere but home.
