What is this light under the side view mirror for?

Please, take a look at this picture:

This photo was taken from a Ford Mondeo... and the light is activated by a remote control.

Does anybody knows what is the use of it?!

These are puddle lamps... very useful in soggy britain.

My guesses:

1. to light the area below the door, so that driver/passenger can avoid, say, stepping into a puddle

2. give driver a better sense of the car's "width" when pulling up into tight a parking space
