Does anyone know what a white circle with a black cross on it means please? Is it an old road sign, or not?

I have seen a white circle road sign with a black cross on it. Is it an old sign for the end of the national speed limit which is now obsolete, or is it current? If it is current - does anyone know the meaning?

"Is it an old sign for the end of the national speed limit..."

No.

That sign is still in use, but now means 'National speed limit applies' Rather than change thousands of road signs in 1965, when the N.S.L. was introduced, the old sign that meant 'No speed limit', simply had its meaning changed, to what appears in the Highway Code today.

It's not unusual to have experimental road signs in trial areas (assuming the sign your saw was new). What you describe is very similar to the railroad crossing signs used in the U.S. The only similar sign I've seen in the U.K. is one which denotes a locally controlled level crossing - but that applies to train drivers, not road users.

The old (pre 1966) sign for cross roads was a white rectangle with a black cross on it. I've never seen a white circle with a black cross.

If it was on a post then add a photo with context to help us. If it was lying on the verge then it may have been a military convoy sign that fell from the back of a lorry (honest, they have these fixed to the rear axle of large military vehicles. They're about 30 cm diameter)

The national speed limit sign is a black diagonal line over a white background, not a cross.

Did you see it by a tram line (e.g. in Croydon or Blackpool)? There is such a sign used on tram routes, intended for tram drivers. I don't know what it means to them.

It is a trick query. There are no circles in UK. Squares are for measuring distance by using helicopter. Chevrons are for atmosphere distances to the automobile in entrance. Ruler lines are for pace cameras to measure distance and how rapid you're going. Circles are in your mind!

Hi buddy!

Did it look something like this, but without "R"'s?:

They used to use such signs for railroad crossings a long time ago, until it was all brought together and everyone was used to use the same kind of signs.
