I need information on how to go about importing a car to the states. My Brother lives in South America and he is shipping me the car. What I want to find out if there is a reputable "agent" that does the paper work for a fee or can I do this myself. The car is a 27 year old Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43. I live in Southern California
Gracias !

Gracias? Last time I checked, California was still in America! Speak English! If you don't know how, then learn!

There are lots of agents who can do this all for you, but with a Toyota Land Cruiser, it should be unnecessary. All you need is a letter from the manufacturer, that the vehicle in question did meet US standards and does not require modification. You just show the letter to the customs agent, pay any duties if the mileage is too low and car too new, and then give the letter to DMV, along with proof of ownership and VIN number. You only need an import agent if you need the vehicle to be converted or tested, in order to prove it is in compliance. The manufacturer has already done all that so it does not need repetition. It is only if the manufacturer won't certify compliance that an agent is required.

If all the paperwork does go bad somehow, an alternative is to import it as parts, and then have a body shop "rejuvenate" it for you.
