Yeah it is illegal.
I had the same problem as you actually.
I got pulled over constantly and said it fell off in the road etc and said it was temp, got away with it for a while.
Then I unluckily bumped in to the same copper twice.... oops!
Hope I helped xxxx

You are silly. Then fasten it to the car directly, if you don't want to touch the bumper. Some cars are made that way from the factory. But you have that Long plate don't you? You are just making life hard on yourself.. After a few bang ups, the license plate will be the newest looking thing there. Window is not good enough as from the side, the suns glare can eliminate the plate/so can a dirty window. Best to see your motor carriers regulation book just to be safe and not get pinched.

I think it's legal to have the number plate above the bumper (eg on the front grill) but I don't think it's legal to have the number plate on the dashboard for too long.

no longer possibly. Certains autos like some Alfa's have their plates on the corner, yet whilst your automobile is manufacturered for a critical plate, that thats the place it is going to be. extensive style plates in corners of residing house windows/ends of bumpers tend to be commerce plates.
